pure wildlife in Kanha National Park. A horseshoe shaped valley girdled by
the spurs of the Mekal ridge provides Kanha with interesting topography. The
Surpan River meanders through Kanha's central maidans - grasslands that
cover the extensive plateaus. Steep rocky escarpments along their edges give
splendid views of the valleys. The grasslands at Kanha punctuated with forests of sal, inhabited with varieties of deer - the barasingha, chital (spotted deer), chousingha, nilgai, the majestic gaur (Indian bison) and wild pig, is 'tiger country'. At Kanha you can view both the predator and the prey. Kanha is one of the most beautiful and scenic wildlife sanctuaries of Asia. It preserves numerous animal, bird and plant species. As in other parks finding wild beasts in Kanha too is always a matter of luck. However Kanha is so rich in wildlife that the odds are always titled in your favour. First time visitors show the tendency of looking for large animals and overlook the smaller creatures. 175 varieties of birds can be found in Kanha. If you are keen on bird watching, look forward to a full bird show. Almost all visitors to Kanha want to see the Tiger. However, for spotting one, you have to show patience. Even when you have not seen a tiger, you will not be left unrewarded. While trying to find a tiger, one can easily catch glimpses of all the grazers. One can see creatures like Porcupine, Gray Langurs, Mongoose, Hyena, Jungle Cat, and even a Leopard. Among other attractions in this Tiger country include several species of Deer - the Barasingha, Chital or Spotted Deer, Chousingha, Nilgai, as well as the majestic Gaur or Indian Bison and wild Pig. Elephant Safari : The beasts at Kanha are best observed from the elephant back and the open landscape makes the chance of sightings reasonably good. Kanha Museum : There is a museum at the park, presenting attributes and activities of the park and the tribal culture of the state of Madhya Pradesh. Several excursion points can be visited from Kanha. Most of these places are historicaly important. You can base yourself at Kanha and visit some popular tourist destinations of Madhya Pradesh. The city of Nagpur is a nice weekend destination from Kanha. The town is known for its orange orchards. Another city to visit is Jabalpur. The town hosts some important historical monuments and archaeological findings. Jabalpur is also known for its highly revered Tilwara ghat. This is the place where Mahatma Gandhi's ashes were immersed in the river. Within the Park, a popular attraction is Bamni Dadar, also known as Sunset Point. The place offers an impressive backdrop of the sunset against grazing Sambhars and Gaurs. This magnifies the natural splendor of the area. Among its plentiful wildlife and bird population, the most popular sightings are of Tiger roaming freely in the sanctuary.
The birds species in the park are cuckoos, papihas, rollers, bee-eater, hoopoes, drongos, warblers, storks, teals, pintails, pond herons, egrets, peacock, pea fowl, jungle fowl, spur fowl, partridges, quails, ring doves, spotted parakeets, green pigeons, rock pigeons, kingfishers, woodpeckers, finches, orioles, owls, and fly catchers. Unique attraction of Kanha National Park is Barasingha or Swamp Deer. It would be proper representative of Kanha. Swamp deers at Kanha are of hard ground variety, which live in the large open swathes of grass amidst the jungles of teak and bamboo. Not long ago, the Barasingha was faced with extinction. Desperate measures were taken by the authorities to save them. The species were saved and park is once again replete with their calls. There is also a museum at Kanha . It tells about the attributes and activities of the park as well as tribal culture.
