flora and fauna. Visit to Jim Corbett National Park, one of the most popular
forests in India, would give any couple interested in wildlife plenty of
fun. Any tour of the park would mean lots of joy. Sprawled in the foothills
of the Himalayas, varied topography and vegetation gives Corbett a rich
diversity natural beauty. And the same can be said about the inhabitants
too.
A picturesque Ramganga River meanders through the entire length of the Park
and little forest streams tumble through the ravines. While dense stands of
sal cloak the higher ridges, mixed deciduous forests are found throughout
the Park and over 110 varieties of trees, 51 species of shrubs and over 33
kinds of bamboos and grasses are seen here. The Park presents plenty of
variety in vegetation as well as animals.
Tiger & Other Animals
Corbett has the highest density of tiger in India. Four of deer - hog deer,
samber, chital and barking deer and other prey like the wild boar, support
the predator. The Park has elephants, the Himalayan black bear in the higher
elevations, sloth bear, varieties of lesser cats, dhole -the wild dog and an
entire spectrum of colourful birds including water birds, pheasants, jungle
fowl and the Indian hornbill.
Excursions
It can also be defined as a forest trail, except that instead of walking,
hiking or trekking, you have also got the options of explore the forest
regions via a jeep or an elephant. It is possible to see elephants all over
the park. Corbett is also the only home of the rare Indian pagolin. Consider
yourself supremely blessed if you spot one!
Splendid Biodiversity
The Corbett National Park is an excellent and largely inviolate specimen of
the rich dense stands of Sal cloak the higher ridges, mixed deciduous
forests are found throughout the park. Because of its rich bio- geographic
diversity, the Park is a natural haven for the flora and fauna of the
plains, the sub mountainous regions and high altitude areas. The lifeline of
the Park is the sparkling Ramganga river which provides safe harbour to
mahaseer fish, crocodile and other species.
Best Time to Visit
The best visiting season of Corbett is from November 15 to June 15. Corbett remains closed between June 16 and November 14, when the monsoons flood the river beds and cut the fragile road links.
How to Get There
Air: Phoolbagh, Pantnagar at a distance of 50-kms is the nearest airport. Delhi at a distance of 300-kms is the nearest international airport.
Rail: Ramnagar is on the broad gauge track from where the road transport options have to be availed to reach the park. For faster trains and connections to other parts change at Moradabad.
Road: Dhikala is 300-kms from Delhi, 145-kms from Lucknow and 51-kms from Ramnagar. The route from Delhi spans Hapur-Murababad-Ramnagar. The turn off is some 7-kms beyond Muradabad to the left, marked by a small board. The route from Lucknow spans Bareilly-Kichha-Rudrapur-Doraha-Kashipur. Ramnagar is served by frequent buses to and from Nainital and Ranikhet, 112-kms north. Buses arrive every half hour or so after the eight hour trip from Delhi; Delhi Transport corporation run a semi deluxe service, and most of the alternatives are pretty basic.
