History of Venice
Refugees from Roman cities made the original population Venice. These
people had fleed to save themselves from barbarian invasions. For this
reason they established their city in a swampy, sparsely settled lagoon.
Events & Festivals
Important events celebrated in Venice are Venetian Carnival, Venice Film
Festival and International Exhibition of Modern Art. Venice Carnival is
celebrated during the month of February. Thousands of tourists throng Venice
at this time. The carnival is celebrated in balls or in streets. One can
enjoy rhythmic music, historical costumes, interesting masks and intriguing
mannerisms. Venice International Film Festival is celebrated in summer
season.
Transport
Venice is served by Marco Polo Airport, 10 km from Venice. Water Bus,
locally known as Vaporetto, is the best method of transport in Venice. If
you plan to spend whole day travelling around Venice better get a travel
pass. Gondola rides of Venice canals are balace test because the tourists
has to remain stading. Water Taxis (motor boats) cost almost as much as
Gondolas. Regular buses are also available in Venice but they are the least
exciting way to travel around the town.
