Brief
History
Roman history begins from the early days of civilization. Most modern
historians agree that Rome founded in 625BC. Initially Rome was ruled by
monarchs. But later the Romans took power in their own hands. They elected a
council to rule themselves. For this development we call the Roman Empire as
the Roman Republic.
The senate appointed a person as consul but his tenure was only one year.
This was a wise way to check his activities. The Roman way of governance was
very successful. It existed from 510BC to 23BC i.e. almost 500 years. The
Roman Empire was eventually overwhelmed by German tribes. In modern times,
Rome has become the seat of Roman Catholic Church, which has its
headquarters in the soverign state of Vatican City.
Rome was the seat of great military leaders and emperors like Augustus,
Claudius, Titus and the most famous among them, Julius Caesar.
